Having completed the early morning circuit at Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, it was time to move onto the next stop on our trusty map of the Arenal area, the town of La Fortuna.
 La Fortuna Town:
19 kilometers and 15 minutes later, we crossed the border from Guanacaste province into Alajuela Province and arrived into the town of La Fortuna. Along the way, we passed through the ritzy Tabacon area that’s known for its many hot spring resorts (and secret free hot spring).
Getting to La Fortuna Waterfall:
From the Parroquia San Juan Bosco La Fortuna in La Fortuna Park, it’s about 10 minutes to the parking lot of La Fortuna Waterfall.
Upon arrival, you pay the entrance fee of $15 at the front desk and you can enter the park. As you begin the short hike, you’ll notice a bathroom and changing area for those who wish to go swimming down in the river.
You’ll also notice an orchid garden right before the gift shop and restaurant area.
The Hike Down to La Fortuna Waterfall:
As you descend towards the foot of the waterfall, you’ll travel along a well-marked (and likely very crowded) paved path.
You’ll need to descend a series of large and very steep steel staircases.
As you near the bottom of the descent, some of the volcanic features like the columnar basalt (below) come into view.
The Waterfall:

The Swimming Hole (River):
If you continue on downhill past La Fortuna Waterfall you reach the river where there will [undoubtedly] be many people hanging out and swimming.
What Goes Down Must Go Back Up:
When you are done swimming and/or lunching, it’s time to head back up.
Final Thoughts on La Fortuna Waterfall:
This excursion was a bit shorter and pricier than others in the area, but it’s worth it especially if you go for a swim. The hike itself is short, but its very steep and very humid – so water is a must. Take your time, there are plenty of “resting areas” on the way back up.
Cheers!
