About Fernando Botero
Fernando Botero is a Colombian artist, born in Medellin in 1932. He began his career as an artist in the 1940s, and studied at the National University of Colombia, as well as the Academia San Fernando in Madrid.
Botero’s work is instantly recognizable for his exaggerated, plump figures that he calls “Boterismo.” The style is characterized by the use of volume and proportion, with figures that have an almost comical quality to them with exaggerated features that emphasize their curves and plumpness. His figures are not meant to be taken too seriously, but rather to bring a smile to people’s faces. He has also commented that his figures are meant to be inclusive, as they depict people of all sizes and shapes.
Despite his playful style, Botero’s work often addresses serious themes. Many of his sculptures and paintings comment on political and social issues, such as war, poverty, and corruption. His style is often associated with satire and humor, and he uses his figures to comment on class and society and the world around him.

Botero Sculptures At Grand Wailea
The Grand Wailea has one of the largest collections of Botero sculptures outside of a museum. Although many pieces are scattered throughout the resort, many of the largest sculptures are centered around the aptly named Botero Bar, providing guests with unexpected encounters with these iconic works of art.
These are the nine sculptures in the Grand Wailea Collection.
