After an excellent stay at the Crowne Plaza Vientiane, it was time to move on to our next Laotian adventure, the town of Luang Prabang.
Whenever possible, I try and stay at hotels redeemable on points.
However, in this case, we decided on staying at a highly rated spot on Trip Advisor that went for about $25 USD per night and was really close to the touristy section of Luang Prabang.
Was that a good choice?
Review: Villa Rattanakon (Luang Prabang, Laos)
Villa Rattanakon is a small, but charming hotel that walks the fine line between guesthouse, hostel, and hotel.
That’s part of the draw. It’s the kind of place where guests leave their shoes at the door.
By my count, there were about eight guest rooms on the upper floor, and about another six rooms on the ground level.
The Courtyard
There was a small courtyard with a couple of tables and a fountain in the front of the building.

The hotel gave me a copy of this handy map at check-in.
The Two Twin Bed Room
The room itself was simple and bare-boned; but it had everything we needed for a cozy stay including a TV, A/C, safe, refrigerator, and some bottled water.
The beds were comfortable and clean.
The Bathroom
The bathroom on the other hand, was not exactly what I was expecting.
I was caught a little off-guard by the sink/toilet/shower [with no curtain] combo.
However, having travelled Asia extensively, I’ve seen these types of bathrooms before. It didn’t bother me, but I could see how it could bother some.
More than anything, these types of bathroom tend to get your toiletry bags wet.
Also, the hotel did not provide shampoo, conditioner, or soap. Know before you go.
The Balcony
The second floor balcony was attractive with its wooden design, metallic accents, and gas lamp-style lanterns.

The Bottom-Line Review: Villa Rattanakon (Luang Prabang, Laos)
The bottom-line was we really enjoyed our stay at the Villa Rattanakon.
Bang-for-the-buck, it’s a hard value to beat (as long as you can deal with the shower curtain-less bathroom). The rooms were fine, the breakfast was simple but good, and the service was very friendly.
Villa Rattanakon is a popular hotel among travelers because of its low rates, free breakfast, and excellent location which is walking distance to the main attractions of wonderful Luang Prabang.
At just $25 USD a night, this place was an absolute steal.
I’d easily (and happily) stay there again.
Cheers!

It looks really nice. How well did the a/c work? That tends to be pretty variable in Asia on well priced rooms.
The A/C worked well, no mosquitoes at night, I really couldn’t complain.
