During a tour of Kuala Lumpur (from Singapore), I needed a place to crash for a couple of hours and the closest place I could find (that was open at 4:00 am) was the Melia Kuala Lumpur.

But was it a good choice?

About The Melia Kuala Lumpur

The Melia Kuala Lumpur is owned and operated by Melia Hotels International, a Spanish hotel chain.

Location And Getting There

Here’s the description from the hotel’s official website:

[The hotel is] “located within Kuala Lumpur’s prime attractions, shopping malls, heritage row, art galleries and flourishing business hubs, such as The Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur Tower, and Pavilion KL shopping mall”. “It is walking distance to the LRT, MRT and Monorail stations”.

The Melia Kuala Lumpur is located about 1 hour away from the Airport by Taxi (which is basically the only option).

There is no direct public transportation available from KUL Airport.

The Lobby

I was pleasantly surprised by the hotel as I stumbled in at 4:00 am.

The hotel seemed rather nice and upscale, and there were two bright and friendly associates working at the front desk.

I swore they were speaking Spanish (I didn’t know at that time that Melia was a Spanish Hotelier), so I walked up and said “hola”.

The Check-In

I asked if they had a room for a couple of hours, and if so, how much would it cost me.

The friendly associates said, “of course”, and wrote down on a the price on a sticky note which I verified through booking.com.

$50 USD for the night seemed more than reasonable – if not outstanding – for the Melia, so I booked it on the spot.

I was beat from the 4 hour drive in from Singapore and I was in desperate need of a couple more hours of sleep.

The Premium Guestroom

I didn’t realize it at check-in, but I had been upgraded from a Melia Guestroom to a Premium Guestroom.

The room was clean, if not a bit basic, but it was spacious and appeared to be newly renovated.

I wasn’t sure if I quite liked the yellow lighting, but it didn’t matter because I was very tired and I knew I’d be asleep in 5 minutes anyways.

The Bathroom

The bathroom had a black-and-white color scheme that seemed straight out of the 1980’s, but I kind of dug it.

The View From The Room

When I woke up, I took a peek out the window only to find I had a view of the Petronas Twin Towers.

It was the perfect start to my day in KL.

The Bottom-Line Review: Melia Kuala Lumpur (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)

As mentioned earlier, I booked this hotel more out of necessity than out of choice (as my tour had dropped me off across the street at 4:00 am).

Unbeknownst to me, the Melia Kuala Lumpur turned out to the perfect hotel. I was pleasantly surprised at every turn.

The hotel was in a great location, at a great price, and it was more upscale than I had expected it to be. They even gave me a free upgrade.

Knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again next time I’m in KL. In fact, I’d like to check out other hotels in the Melia portfolio.

Final Rating: 7/10  – This hotel had excellent service, clean rooms, and a perfect location. For the price, it was a great deal (even at 4:00 am).
