The Bottom-Line Review: Dreams Aventuras Riviera Maya
A destination wedding brought us out to Dreams Aventuras Riviera Maya. In the past, I’ve stayed up and down the Mayan Riviera from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen to Belize – but I never had a chance to stay at an all-inclusive resort in Mexico – until this stay. Truth be told, the wedding party had a tall order finding the perfect spot for an upscale, yet affordable for all, family friendly resort, but I have to say Dreams Aventuras Riviera Maya fit did the bill.
First the positives: The resort had a secluded marina location in Puerto Aventuras, surrounded by a small village (that included a super-difficult golf course). The all-inclusive dining offerings were good overall. Portofino and El Patio were both very good, as was daily breakfast at World Cafe. There were lots of things to do no matter the time of day (or night). The room was comfortable and clean and came with some daily snack and drink freebies. The Globalist upgrade to the Preferred Club was very good as guests received special check-ins, preferred rooms on the preferred floor, access to the Preferred Club (for snacks and meals), and access to the Preferred amenities like the exclusive pool, bar, and restaurant.
With that said, there were of course some negatives. I’d hardly say the Preferred Club upgrade was worth the recommended $400 extra per day, but I might pay $50 to $100 per day [max]. The beach, due to its proximity to the marina, was off-limits for swimming; instead there was a salt-water lagoon next to the main pool area. Lastly, we ran into a strange situation where I gifted the bride and groom a Guest of Honor award of Globalist status but the hotel refused to honor it, including giving a suite to wedding couple(!). They even refused to budge after I had Hyatt corporate talk with them directly to tell them there were in fact suites available for the Guest of Honor. In the end, believe it or not, we had to resort to digging into the fine print of contract terms of Globalist and it turned out the hotel management knew something the even the Hyatt supervisor representatives didn’t – this is one of the only Hyatts in the world that is not subject to Globalist suite upgrades even when there are plenty of suites available. Because of this fact, and the fact that breakfast is already included, using a “Guest of Honor” award here is basically pointless. In the end, hotel management did finally offer us and the wedding couple a Preferred Room as a courtesy; in addition they offered the wedding couple a heavily discounted upgrade to their best preferred suite.
Still, aside from the fine print snafu, I believe all guests of the wedding party (ourselves included) did thoroughly enjoy our stay. Dreams Aventuras Riviera Maya is legit a great value for an all inclusive resort and we can easily recommend it to families, couples, or groups looking for a good bang-for-the-buck stay in the Mayan Riviera (just don’t waste a Guest of Honor award here).
