Lately, I’ve been pleasantly surprised with American Express (see my recent posts on the Platinum Card by American Express for Ameriprise Financial, the American Express Everyday Preferred Card, and the Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express).
But, I also know that American Express Hilton Cards are generally not as generous with retention offers as American Express Membership Rewards cards are.
Still, it was worth a try.

Before making any “keep or cancel” decision, I’ve found it wise to always call the card company to see if any retention offers are available.
The Phone Call
I called the American Express Retention Line at 1-800-452-3945. I quickly got a representative, told her I was trying to determine if I should keep the card.
Usually, this would be where the representative comes back and reads me the laundry list of all the benefits of “card-x”, so I was surprised at her quick response, “sir, due to all that’s going on, we are really not doing retention offers right now, we’re really more focused on helping businesses and people make their payments at this time”. She continued, “If you would like, I can cancel this card for you as there are no downgrade options”.
So there it was – no retention offers available.
Under normal circumstances, I’d think she was playing hardball, but there is nothing normal in 2020.
I thanked her and told her I would think it over.
To Keep Or Cancel?
I decided to keep this card another year as I find it extremely valuable on non-bounused spending for the free annual weekend night I earn by spending $15,000 on this card in a calendar year (and the minimum 45,000 Hilton Honors points that come with that spending).

In this case, I struck out. But I place the blame solely on 2020.
For now, I’ll keep this card for another year as a go-to for my non-bonused spending.
