Call Results: My Retention Offer For The Citi Prestige Credit Card

It’s already been another year with the Citi Prestige credit card, which means its time to evaluate whether this card is worth keeping or closing before I’m on the hook for the $450 annual fee.

I have to admit, I’ve been really struggling with deciding if this card is really worth it anymore as the devaluations to this card have been severe and I already have most of the benefits of this card on other cards – like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, the American Express Platinum, and the Citi Premier. The notable exception here is the infamous 4th night free benefit.

I had recently had luck with the Citi AT&T Access More credit card and the Citi Premier credit card, so I was hoping I’d be able to replicate the good luck on this retention offer.

Let me preface the following with the fact that I had about $8,000 worth of spend on this card last year.

So what was the end result?

Surprisingly, the end result was “I’m sorry sir, we are no longer giving out retention offers on this card as you already receive a $250 flight credit and the 4th night free benefit”.

I was a bit shocked, and wanted a clarification. “You mean there is no offer available to me, or that there are no retention offers available to anybody who holds this card?”, he responded, “there are no offers available to anybody”.

I found this hard to believe, thanked the representative, and then hung up. I waited 15 days (until the next month) to see if I would have a retention offer with another representative. I received the same spiel, “there are no offers available to holders of this card because of the benefits”.

The Bottom Line: Call Results: My Retention Offer For The Citi Prestige Credit Card

Well, it appears I struck out on this one. No soup for me.

But even more troubling is that I’ve spoken to other bloggers who’ve told me the same thing – Citi is not giving out retention offers for this card anymore. I’m not sure if this is temporary, or part of a larger trend, but it is disturbing.

Ultimately, I decided to hold this card for one more year as I was encouraged by a Citi marketing survey I received earlier in the year that Citi was considering positive changes to this card to compete with the likes of Chase and American Express. Guess I’ll give it a year and see.

Cheers!
